Drophead Delight in The Rolls Royce Dawn

    19. July 2016

As the birds sang their first song of the day and the morning light pushed itself through the clouds for the first time it was a moment. It was Dawn and in just a few hours from this moment we had a Rolls Royce Motor Car by the very same name arriving. RR says, “Quite simply, it is the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever built.”

The latest and most highly anticipated RR to date is a special thing to see, feel and experience. Welcome to the Rolls Royce Dawn.

Featuring the monstrous power plant found in the majority of the family the Dawn is equipped with RRs beloved 6.6 litre, Twin Turbo V12 engine. Capable of 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. With 780Nm of torque the Dawn gives you all the driving pleasures you would expect of a grand tourer and still keeps it subtle and sexy.

The plan was to take our RR on a road trip to remember and utilise a bit of the British sunshine. Scotland was naturally on the list and we wanted to venture deep into the North to shoot the car and road test on some of the United Kingdoms best roads. 7 hours into the drive we took a pitstop in Glasgow and enjoyed the cities ambient nightlife with dinner and drinks. Refuelling ourselves and the car we headed towards the Highlands early the next morning.

We had an opportunity to spend the night at an incredible place in the Scottish Highlands with our friends at Eagle Brae, (check out their website) an amazing, unique hotel experience that made this trip even more special. We were given our own log cabin named “Loxia”, completely crafted and finished by hand. The location and views from this remote location were incredible and the calming serenity of our surroundings were enhanced by nature, water and mountain views. There was a homely feel about the cabin and the staff there were incredibly hospitable.

Moving on to our second day of testing, the car just soaks up the road and does so in a sensual, calming and invigorating manner. Gliding through the mountain valleys and just eating up the turns and bends, the car feels even more agile then its older brothers and more balanced too. Even though its heavy (2560kg) and solid throughout it seems to effortlessly keep pace and weightlessly carry you from A to B. People would stop us and ask us what it was we were driving. “Is that the new Rolls Royce Dawn?”

A feature of brilliance about driving this car is its ZF 8 Speed Transmission, which is guided by satellite and this ensures the box is in the appropriate gear at all times, which enables the driver to get the most out of the engine. From identifying driving style and using GPS the car could detect you are approaching a bend or an incline and make sure the correct gear is held in order to have maximum power available as you exit. In terms of “off the line starts” the Dawn will leave most cars behind at the lights and the excitement of the weight moving when you floor it is special, but even that is an elegant process.

Concerning the interior of the car, it is unmatched by most and comparable to none. That staple RR leather work (Fendi leather from high altitude cows) just wins again and again. The attention to detail and material craftsmanship really proves itself with every ride. You can only stop and admire at the seats, dash, woodwork and leatherwork as a bystander but as a driver you FEEL these things all commutatively come to work to support your every expectation of this brand name.

The silent drop top procedure really makes the car feel and look different and whenever possible this is a car to drive topless. It looks and performs amazingly with both the top on and off and the experience is simply “motoring uncompromised”.
